Home Fire Safety

Home fire safety is a very serious matter, and you should take certain steps to promote that safety and minimize risk to yourself. First, be aware that fires could happen to anybody, including you. It’s not a fate that happens to other families or only happens on television. So you must be prepared. Second, remember all those fire drills you went through at school? Those fire drills are a good idea, regardless of how old you are or where you live. Fire drills are especially a good idea if you have children, and they need to learn the possible escape routes out of your home. Remember, you need to plan for at least two routes out of your home because one of them might be blocked by fire. Also, keep all exits free and unobstructed, or else you might be trapped. Your escape plan should include a way to quickly notify the fire department in case of an emergency.

You can also minimize the chances of a fire by doing simple things. For starters, never smoke in bed. The chances of falling asleep are very high, and hundreds of people die every year in accidents. When you cook, be aware of how to put out different fires, and never leave food unattended. Make sure to never leave children unattended either, especially where they can reach matches or lighters. Also, never overload electrical outlets with too many plugs. This is a definite fire hazard, and could start a very fast moving electrical fire.
